Glass batch plants and raw material handling for float glass and fibreglass

Scorpio Engineering BMH designs, manufactures and commissions complete glass batch plants: raw material intake from bags, big bags and trucks, dense phase conveying to silos, weighing and batching to 0.1% accuracy, batch mixing and controlled feeding to the furnace, all under PLC and SCADA control.

Installed at global glass and glass fibre groups and float glass, fibreglass and glass wool plants across India.

A typical float glass batch house

Flowsheet of a float glass batch house: truck and big bag intake, bucket elevators, raw material silos, weigh hoppers, mixers and belt conveyors to the furnace
  1. IntakeRaw materials arrive by tipper truck, big bag or bag, through truck unloaders, big bag unloaders and a dense phase vessel.
  2. Silo fillingBucket elevators, screw conveyors and pneumatic conveying lines fill one silo per raw material, each with a bin vent filter.
  3. DosingBin dischargers, rotary airlocks, metering screws and vibro feeders dose each material into its weigh hopper.
  4. MixingBelt conveyors gather the weighed batch into the mixers.
  5. To the furnaceBelt and shuttle conveyors carry the mixed batch and cullet to the furnace hoppers.

A typical fibreglass batch plant

Flowsheet of a fibreglass batch plant: bag slitting machine and dense phase vessel, raw material silos, weigh hoppers, pneumatic blender transporter and furnace silos
  1. Bag emptyingA bag slitting machine empties raw material bags into a dense phase vessel.
  2. Silo loadingDense phase conveying fills each raw material silo through long radius bends and target boxes.
  3. WeighingBin activators, rotary airlocks and screw conveyors feed the weigh hoppers; a loss-in-weight feeder adds minor ingredients.
  4. BlendingA pneumatic blender transporter mixes the batch and conveys it in one step.
  5. Furnace feedingFurnace silos feed each furnace at a controlled rate through screw conveyors.

Glass batch handling system

Commissioned in August 2000, Scorpio’s system loads raw materials from bags into silos by dense phase conveying and weighs each one electronically to 0.1% accuracy. A pneumatic blender transporter mixes and wets the batch, cullet is added, and water-cooled screw feeders deliver it to the furnace at controlled rates.

Float glass manufacturer

Jumbo bag unloading and dense phase conveying

Scorpio upgraded a float glass plant’s raw material handling with a jumbo bag unloading station and dense phase conveying rated at 10–15 TPH. The new system raised throughput, cut manual handling and brought dust emissions within air quality limits.

Fibreglass manufacturer

Conveying and batching for glass raw materials

Scorpio commissioned two systems: 6 TPH pneumatic conveying and a 3 TPH batching system for silica sand, feldspar, dolomite, soda ash and limestone.

Intake-to-furnace batch handling

Scorpio supplied the complete raw material handling system, from intake to the furnace hopper, with the batch blended and conveyed in one step by a pneumatic blender transporter.

Frequently asked questions

What is a glass batch plant?

A glass batch plant receives and stores each raw material, weighs them to the recipe, mixes the batch and delivers it with cullet to the furnace. Scorpio supplies the complete batch house, from intake to furnace feeding, on a turnkey basis.

How accurate is the weighing?

Our fibreglass batch plant for a global glass fibre group weighs each raw material electronically to 0.1% accuracy. Accuracy is specified per plant and per ingredient to suit your glass composition.

Why use dense phase conveying for glass raw materials?

Silica sand and feldspar are highly abrasive. Dense phase conveying moves them slowly in dense slugs, which greatly reduces pipe wear and keeps the batch from segregating.

Can the batch plant handle cullet?

Yes. Cullet is added to the mixed batch before it is conveyed to the furnace, either by belt conveyor or in the pneumatic blender transporter.

Which glass companies use Scorpio systems?

Our glass installations include global glass and glass fibre groups. Ask us for references for your glass type and capacity.
